The 2018-2019 School year brought many successes in the CNY German studies world.

On the secondary school level:


Generous financial Awards from the Central New York German-American Society:

Travel Scholarships:




Lucas Gascon - FM: AATG National Exam Scholarship winner
He will spend 4 weeks in Germany this summer.


Ian Bryant - FM:  Congress-Bundestag scholarship winner.  
He will study for a year in Germany.
Daniel Popp - FM:  Goethe Institute's Award of Excellence Travel Scholarship winner.  He will spend 3 weeks this summer in Germany.

The National German Exam Awards:
48 Students in the CNY Chapter of AATG took the High School National German exam.

in the Fayetteville-Manlius School District are recognized for their achievement on the National German Exam.

Baldwinsville Central's German department has as of this spring a GAPP Program!


Meanwhile at Syracuse University there were:

  • two graduating majors (both now pursuing careers as German teachers)
  • one student with a Modern Foreign Language major with German as one of their languages
  • two graduating minors
  • one student who will be in Germany as a Fulbright Teaching Assistant
  • one student who won the Max Kade Prize for Undergrad Research for Best Research Project & Presentation
  • five students who received the Max Kade Travel Award
  • ten new students to join Delta Phi Alpha
  • two students who conducted research for http://thefutureofmycity.org as part of the Deutschlandjahr 2019 (winners will be announced later in June)

SU's Gerlinde Ulm Sanford Award Winners:

At SUNY Oswego:
SUNY Oswego students Momoko Ogiso (left) and Michelle DiBlasio (right)
German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst), or DAAD,
grants to study in Germany this summer.

SUNY Oswego student Michael Kaefer will continue a second year as a Fulbright Scholar in Germany, continuing to teach in Troisdorf.



Chris Byrne, also on Fulbright in Germany, will stay another year in Germany, but not to teach English. He applied for a position at Beck’s brewery in Bremen and has very good chances to be accepted.
